Reproductive biology of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus Lowe, Investigations were carried out about the reproductive biology of the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus Lowe, a serranid protogynous hermaphrodite fish inhabitant of rocky bottoms from shallow waters up to m depth. Data from samples of juvenile groupers on intertidal pools were used to link their occurrence in the pools to the post-spawning season. To describe the histological changes on gonads along the reproductive cycle and to establish maturation scales, groupers were histologically tested for sex determination. The results of calculated gonadosomatic GSI and hepatosomatic HSI indexes, showed that maturation occurred along the spring months and the spawning activity during the summer with a peak in December. Liver recovery HSI elevation was evident in the autumn, was the post spawning season. The Dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus Lowe, Serranidae, Epinephelinae , inhabits rocky bottoms, from shallow waters to depths of more than meters and lives in caves of stone blocks Tortonese, It is a well-known teleost fish widely distributed along the southern coast of Brazil and also throughout the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic from the British Isles to South Africa, Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cape Verde Barreiros, It is a proterogynous hermaphrodite. Besides its ecological importance, it has an important economic role for artisanal fisheries along Santa Catarina’s coast Medeiros et al.

Management of the goliath grouper, the largest member of the seabass family, has become an intensely debated issue in recent years. The University of Florida has been looking at the most recent science-based information on the biology and ecology of goliath grouper relevant to management issues. Historically, the goliath grouper was relatively common and highly conspicuous in portions of its range.
It is a relatively shallow-water species with a tropical to subtropical distribution. In the Eastern Atlantic they occurred from Senegal south to the Congo; however, this population is believed to have been eliminated because no individuals have been observed there for many years. A similar-looking species also occurs in the Pacific Ocean, but recent genetic studies indicate it is a different species.

Online dating does make sense for people like me who are busy and want to meet people beyond their social circles, but meeting up with virtual strangers can be scary. Which is why Grouper JoinGrouper. You join the site using your Facebook account and the site matches you with another member based on information from your profile, including age, education level and interests it seems creepy, but the government has probably done worse. Two days before my Grouper I received an email revealing the location: Phillips — a university area lounge I know well from my Loyola days.
We arrived to the bar, which was empty except for three young men — those must be our dates! They were three MBA candidates; my group is of the more artistic variety, so on paper we were complete opposites. Because there were six of us, there were opportunities to have side conversations that cut down on awkwardness. I was elated that there was none of that extensive talk about mutual friends that often happens after meeting people in New Orleans. Social Media Store Subscribe. Lauren LaBorde ,.

The FWC Commission listened to a review and discussion on the next steps for goliath grouper research and management at the December meeting. The giant of the grouper family, the goliath formerly called jewfish has brown or yellow mottling with small black spots on the head and fins, a large mouth with jawbones that extend well past its small eyes, and a rounded tail. It also has five dark body bands or stripes that are most visible on young goliath.

Hawaiian grouper Hyporthodus quernus is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and is regionally important, yet little is known about its life history. This large species is managed within the Deep 7 bottomfish complex, which includes six snapper species that are assumed to have similar life history traits.
Previous age estimates were not validated and suggested a maximum age of 34 years. To evaluate the preliminary study and provide a valid basis for life history parameters, we aged otoliths using bomb radiocarbon 14 C dating.
Age, growth, and mortality of the Atlantic goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara in French Guiana.
Warsaw grouper, Hyporthodus nigritus , is a western Atlantic Ocean species typically found at depths between 55 and m. It is listed as a species of concern by the U. Therefore, the accuracy of otolith-based aging was validated, which enabled growth and longevity estimates to be made for nGOM Warsaw grouper. Fishing mortality also was estimated in the model, which resulted in a ratio of fishing to natural mortality of 5. Editor: Heather M.

Subscriber Account active since. Grouper Instead of relying on machine-driven algorithms to find you a potential date or new friend in the real world, New York-based startup Grouper tries to do things a little more, shall we say, humanely. Here’s how it works: You link your profile to your Grouper account when you sign up, and set up a few “preferences”—like how much older or younger you want the people you are meeting to be, and what kind of bar you want to go to.
Then, Grouper uses your Facebook profile to match you up with three other people—guys or girls, depending on what you select. You bring two friends—”wingmen” or “wingwomen”—and meet for a drink, and it goes from there.

The topic of Internet dating — and particularly how people portray themselves in their online profiles — featured prominently in a recent conversation among my friends. I know several veterans of the online dating scene, and their sagas of stretched truths and disturbing surprises and, fortunately, also some real-life success stories are plentiful. This got me thinking: How would one go about crafting the perfect dating profile for a triathlete — one that would draw in-it-for-the-right-reasons attention and, ultimately, an ideal partner?

In triathlon, we have the opportunity to race along with the best in the world. That said, without sacrificing our type A personality that many times accompanies personal ambitious standards, goals, and commitment, I want to remind you of the simplicity and privilege it is in being an age grouper. Technically, you are not limited by the number of years that you can race in this sport.
This sport is no joke. Forget the physical strain but consider the emotional truth in that statement. Many pro athletes have come forward with an honest reality of loneliness and having a true struggle with self-worth, outside the sport. You have the chance, as an age grouper, to stay committed to a bigger picture and more fulfilling lifestyle outside the sport.
You do not have to ignore the significance of a bigger picture both mentally and physically. Again, without dismissing our allegiance to our performance aspirations, we have the opportunity to better balance our lifestyle.
Goliath Grouper: Giant of the Reef
Grouper was an online, invite-only social club that uses data gathered from Facebook profiles to organize group outings called Groupers. Matches for the outings were gathered and analyzed first by a computer and then by a human to ensure strong matches. Groupers consisted of two groups of three friends and can consist of three males and three females, six males, six females, or any other possible combination. Michael Waxman founded the New York -based startup in Grouper is an invite-only service that matches two individuals according to data found — with the permission of the user — on the user’s Facebook profile, including age, career, education, etc.
A time is then set for the “Grouper”.

The Manchester giant grouper: putting Manchester on the map for the wrong reasons. What can be learned – or gained – from its fate? As ecologists we understand the excitement of seeing a fish of this size, as did the hundreds of people who visited, curious to see it in the flesh. As conservationists however, we were dismayed at how the story was reported in the media.
Revealingly, the capture and transport of this grouper from a deep-water site near the Seychelles to Manchester, thousands of kilometres away, was presented as an impressive feat, with little critical evaluation – except by many of the online commentators on the articles. Fishing is the major threat to this species, and being classified as Vulnerable means it is facing a high risk of extinction – as is more widely appreciated with other Vulnerable species such as Leatherback and Loggerhead Turtles.
There are several reasons why groupers should not be commercially fished for export markets such as the UK and why consumers here should not eat them. They are large predatory fish, and their removal from an ecosystem can have big knock-on effects on many other marine species 1. The biology of some groupers may also make their populations particularly sensitive to losing large individuals to fishing 2.
